📖 1. Homeostasis and Response

🔑 Key Concepts & Definitions

• Nervous system: The body system that controls rapid responses by sending signals through neurons and processing information to trigger actions.
• Reflex arc: A fast, automatic pathway that links a sensory input to an immediate motor output via processing in the nervous system.
• Endocrine system: The system of hormone-releasing glands that regulates body functions using chemical messengers carried in the blood.
• Osmoregulation: The process of controlling water and dissolved solutes in the body fluids to maintain stable internal conditions.
• Accommodation: Eye focusing that allows the lens to adjust so images fall on the retina for objects at different distances.

📝 Essential Points

• Insulin and glucagon regulate blood glucose by shifting how glucose is stored versus released in the body.
• Reproductive hormones control the menstrual cycle and are involved in fertility treatment regulation.
• Temperature regulation depends on monitoring conditions and triggering body responses to keep conditions near a stable target.
• Kidney function supports control of water and other body fluids, which links directly to osmoregulation data interpretation in practicals.
• The eye uses component structures to form images on the retina, and the brain regions (cerebrum, cerebellum, medulla) have different roles in processing and control.
• In reflex arcs, sensory and motor pathways coordinate to produce a rapid response with minimal delay.

💡 Memory Hook

Reflex = fast wire; Hormones = slow mail; Kidneys = water control; Eye focus = lens accommodation.

📖 2. Inheritance, Variation and Evolution

🔑 Key Concepts & Definitions

• Mitosis: Cell division that produces genetically identical cells, supporting growth and repair.
• Meiosis: Cell division that produces gametes with half the chromosome number and creates genetic variation through recombination.
• DNA and genomes: DNA is the genetic molecule, and a genome is the complete set of genetic material in an organism or cell.
• Punnett squares: A diagram used to predict genotype and phenotype proportions from known parent genotypes for single-gene inheritance.
• Natural selection: Evolution driven by differential survival and reproduction of individuals with inherited traits that improve fitness.

📝 Essential Points

• Sexual reproduction involves meiosis and genetic mixing, while asexual reproduction produces offspring without this sexual genetic recombination.
• Genetic inheritance can be predicted for single-gene traits using Punnett squares to calculate expected outcomes.
• Sex determination is controlled by genetic factors described in the inheritance framework used in the course.
• Single-gene disorders follow inheritance patterns that can be modeled using the same genotype-to-phenotype reasoning as other single-gene traits.
• Evolutionary change can be influenced by mutation, natural selection, selective breeding, genetic modification, and cloning, alongside evidence from fossils and evolutionary trees.
• Inherited disorders have causes and effects that matter for populations, linking individual genetics to population-level implications.

💡 Memory Hook

Mitosis = match; Meiosis = mix; Punnett = predict; Natural selection = survive-and-reproduce.

📖 3. Ecology and Fieldwork Skills

🔑 Key Concepts & Definitions

• Levels of organisation: The hierarchy from organisms to populations and communities used to describe biological patterns and relationships in ecosystems.
• Food chains and food webs: Feeding relationships showing how energy moves through trophic levels, with webs representing multiple interconnected pathways.
• Carbon and water cycles: Natural pathways that recycle carbon and water through living organisms and the environment over time.
• Decomposition and nutrient cycling: Breakdown of organic matter by decomposers and the return of nutrients to the ecosystem for reuse by producers.
• Biodiversity: The variety of species in an area, often used to judge ecosystem stability and resilience.

📝 Essential Points

• Interdependence and competition shape how organisms and species coexist within communities at different levels of organisation.
• Food chains/webs drive energy transfer, while carbon and water cycles recycle key materials that support ecosystem functioning.
• Pyramids of biomass are used to show how biomass changes across trophic levels within an ecosystem’s energy structure.
• Deforestation, global warming, and pollution can reduce biodiversity and disrupt ecosystem processes linked to stability and survival.
• Conservation methods, sustainable fisheries, and food security strategies aim to manage human impact while maintaining long-term ecosystem productivity.
• Ecology practical skills require collecting, representing, and interpreting data from fieldwork and ecosystem investigations, including expected observations.

💡 Memory Hook

Ecosystem = Links (food) + Loops (cycles) + Return (decomposition) + Score (biodiversity).

📖 4. Revision Strategies and Study Resources

🔑 Key Concepts & Definitions

• Active recall: A study method that tests your memory by retrieving information, such as through flashcards, self-testing, and explanations in your own words.
• Spaced repetition: A schedule that revisits topics repeatedly over increasing intervals to strengthen long-term memory retention.
• Past papers and mark schemes: Practice materials that help you identify question patterns and the marking expectations used for exam performance.
• Teach to learn: A revision approach where you explain concepts to another person to reveal gaps and reinforce understanding.
• Required practicals: Core experiments you must understand well enough to explain aims, method expectations, and likely observations in the relevant biology context.

📝 Essential Points

• Active recall can use flashcards, self-testing, and summaries in your own words to improve retrieval strength.
• Past papers with mark schemes support performance by showing patterns in multiple-choice, structured, and extended-answer questions.
• Spaced repetition improves long-term retention by reviewing the same topics over increasing time gaps rather than only once.
• Teach to learn strengthens understanding by forcing you to articulate concepts clearly enough to expose misunderstandings.
• Required practical understanding should cover interpreting expected observations, including homeostasis response measurements and ecosystem investigations.
• Trusted online resources such as BBC Bitesize, Physics & Maths Tutor, and Study Rocket provide interactive revision support.

💡 Memory Hook

Recall now, space it out, check with mark schemes, explain out loud, practice the practicals.

⚠️ Common Pitfalls & Confusions

1. Mixing up mitosis and meiosis leads to incorrect expectations for chromosome number changes and genetic variation across generations.
2. Treating insulin and glucagon as interchangeable regulators can cause wrong predictions about blood glucose trends.
3. Confusing osmoregulation with general temperature control can lead to misinterpreting kidney-related practical data.
4. Assuming a food chain alone captures all feeding relationships can cause errors when questions require food web understanding.
5. Believing accommodation and adaptation are the same can lead to incorrect descriptions of how the eye responds to viewing conditions.
6. Using revision tools only passively without active recall can result in weak exam-style retrieval under time pressure.
